Product Description
Milwaukee 2-1/2 in. Carbide Grit Hole Saw with Carbide Pilot Bit
Model Number: 49-56-0456
The Milwaukee 49-56-0456 is a 2-1/2 in. Carbide Grit Hole Saw with an included Carbide Pilot Bit — an abrasive grit hole saw for cutting clean holes through ceramic tile, porcelain tile, natural stone, fiberglass, and other hard or abrasive materials where toothed hole saws dull immediately and cannot produce a usable hole. The carbide grit rim uses electrodeposited tungsten carbide particles bonded to the hole saw's cutting edge — the abrasive grit cuts through hard tile and stone by grinding material away rather than the tooth-shearing action of conventional hole saws, making it effective in the brittle materials that would fracture, chip, and crack at the cut perimeter if tooth-impact cutting were applied. The 2-1/2 in. diameter is used for showerhead holes in tile walls, larger plumbing stub-out penetrations through tile, and decorative access holes where the 2-1/2 in. opening is the required size for the fixture or fitting being installed.
The included carbide pilot bit provides the centering point that keeps the carbide grit hole saw positioned accurately at the marked hole center during the initial cutting engagement — without the pilot bit, the abrasive hole saw rim has no centering mechanism and would wander across the hard, smooth tile surface before the grit bites and establishes the circular cutting path. Wet cutting with water or drill cooling spray is strongly recommended during carbide grit hole sawing in tile and stone to cool the grit and reduce heat buildup that shortens the carbide grit's service life and risks thermal cracking at the cut edge of heat-sensitive tile materials. Slow, steady feed pressure without forcing the saw into the material maintains contact and prevents the tile face spalling that occurs when excessive pressure overloads the brittle tile at the cut perimeter.
See Milwaukee's complete carbide grit and carbide tipped hole saw lineup for all available sizes for hard materials, and Milwaukee's bi-metal hole saw lineup for wood and softer materials.
