Sponge Interface Pad — a soft foam interface layer that mounts between the random orbit sander's backing plate and the sanding disc to allow the sanding disc to conform to contoured, curved, and irregular surfaces that flat rigid backing plates cannot follow. The sponge interface pad's compressible foam construction allows the sanding disc to flex and conform to the three-dimensional surface geometry of curved wood profiles, body panel contours, furniture rounds, and architectural moldings — maintaining consistent abrasive contact across the full curved surface rather than just the high points that a rigid backing plate contacts on a curved surface. Without the sponge interface pad, a random orbit sander on a curved surface produces uneven sanding that leaves high spots at only the contact points and misses the concave areas between them.
Milwaukee designs the sponge interface pad for the 3 in. random orbit sander format, providing the correct diameter for full sanding disc coverage.
