The pad saver's rigid construction protects the backing plate's hook-and-loop surface from the abrasive wear that direct sandpaper contact causes on the soft backing plate material, significantly extending the backing plate's service life before the hook-and-loop surface wears smooth and loses its ability to securely hold sanding discs. Without a pad saver, the backing plate is the direct wear item — with the pad saver in place, the less-expensive pad saver takes the wear and the backing plate lasts considerably longer.
