The Milwaukee 48-62-3040 is a Clay Spade with a 3/4 in. hex shank for use with professional electric chipping hammers equipped with a hex tool holder — a wide flat spade blade attachment that converts a chipping hammer into a powered digging and clay-cutting tool for breaking through compacted clay, hardpan, and dense soil conditions that manual shovels and digging bars cannot penetrate effectively. The spade blade's wide flat profile cuts through dense clay and hardpan in wide sweeping cutting strokes as the chipping hammer's impact drives the blade into the ground, slicing and loosening the clay deposit for subsequent scooping and removal. The powered approach to clay and hardpan digging dramatically reduces the time and physical effort of hand-digging through the most resistant soil conditions encountered in utility trenching, fence post installation, drainage excavation, and foundation drainage repair work.
Milwaukee drop-forges the clay spade from high-grade steel with heat-treated working areas for the structural loading and repeated impact of sustained digging in compacted clay and hardpan. The 3/4 in. hex shank provides positive anti-rotation locking in the chipping hammer's hex tool holder. The clay spade is used with professional chipping hammers equipped with the 3/4 in. hex tool holder — not for use with SDS+ or SDS Max rotary hammers that use different tool holder interfaces.
