The 5/16 in. diameter serves low-voltage wire routing where the smallest practical drilled passage preserves the most framing member integrity, specific anchor bolt clearance holes in wood construction, and applications where the 1/4 in. adjacent size is too small and the 3/8 in. is larger than the specification requires.
