Product Description
Milwaukee Flat Boring Bit 1/4 in. x 6 in.
Model Number: 48-27-0251
The Milwaukee 48-27-0251 is a 1/4 in. x 6 in. Flat Boring Bit — the smallest standard flat boring bit in Milwaukee's lineup for drilling precise, small-diameter holes through wood framing, dimensional lumber, and wood composites for the smallest wire routing, small fastener pilot holes, and specialty applications requiring a 1/4 in. bore through wood. The 1/4 in. diameter is the minimum standard flat boring bit size, used for low-voltage wire chases where cable can be routed through a minimal-size hole that creates the least structural weakness in the framing member, for small pilot holes in wood that will receive specialty hardware, and for applications where a single-conductor or small wire bundle needs a precisely drilled passage through a wood structural element. The flat boring geometry provides superior hole quality compared to twist bits in wood — a sharp outer spur scores the hole perimeter to prevent surface tear-out, and the flat cutting face shears wood fiber cleanly inside the scored circle, producing a smooth cylindrical hole with flat sides rather than the conical bottom profile of a twist bit.
Heat-treated high carbon steel provides the cutting edge hardness and durability needed for production drilling in wood while remaining sharpened without specialized equipment when the edge dulls from extended use. The self-centering tip positions the bit accurately at the marked center point and prevents the bit from walking on the wood surface during the first moments of engagement before the cutting face contacts and begins to shear material, maintaining hole position accuracy on smooth grain surfaces and end-grain cuts where bit walking is most problematic. The 6 in. length handles standard single-member framing dimensions in typical studs and joists. For extended reach through multiple members, see the 16 in. version.
Milwaukee's flat boring bit range covers 1/4 in. through 1-1/2 in. in both 6 in. and 16 in. lengths for complete rough-in coverage at every standard wire and conduit diameter.
