The Milwaukee 48-20-5497 is a Drift Key for use with Milwaukee SDS Max and Spline One-Piece Core Bits — a steel driving wedge used to remove the centering bit (pilot bit) from the one-piece core bit after the pilot bit has established the hole center and the diamond segments have begun cutting the core kerf. During the initial engagement phase of one-piece core drilling, the centering bit is installed through the center of the core bit to locate the bit accurately at the marked hole center before the diamond segments contact the concrete surface. Once the segments have cut into the concrete sufficiently to guide the bit's position through the kerf, the centering bit must be removed — it is no longer needed for guidance and would prevent the concrete core plug from passing through the center of the bit as drilling deepens. The drift key drives through the slot in the one-piece core bit barrel to knock the centering bit free from its retained position for removal.
Milwaukee designs the drift key geometry specifically for the slot dimensions of SDS Max and Spline one-piece core bits — the correct taper and width allow the drift key to drive through the barrel slot and dislodge the centering bit cleanly with a single hammer blow without damaging the slot or the core bit body. The drift key is used with a standard hammer for driving through the barrel slot. Always remove the centering bit after the diamond segments have established their cutting kerf before continuing to drill to full depth, as leaving the centering bit in place would obstruct the core as it advances through the full penetration depth.
