Milwaukee Sleeve
Model Number: 45-22-2657
The Milwaukee 45-22-2657 is a genuine OEM Sleeve for the 2656-20 M18 1/4 in. Hex Impact Driver. This is the spring-loaded quick-release collar at the nose of the tool, the part the operator pulls forward to drop in or eject a 1/4 in. hex bit. It works as part of a small stack of components on the anvil: a spring behind it pushes the sleeve to its forward locked position, and two 4.0mm steel balls ride in the anvil grooves and are held captive against the bit shank by the inside diameter of the sleeve. Pull the sleeve back and the balls are free to move outward, releasing the bit. Let go and the spring drives the sleeve forward, camming the balls back into the bit groove and locking it in place. Because that cycle happens dozens of times a day on a working impact driver, and because the sleeve is the first thing to make contact when the tool is dropped nose-down or dragged across concrete, it is one of the most frequently replaced parts on the entire tool. Symptoms that call for replacement include bits that fall out on their own, bits that will not seat or will not release, a sleeve that no longer returns forward on its own, and visible cracking, mushrooming, or burring on the collar.
Because Milwaukee Tool specifies replacement parts by both catalog number and serial number, always verify your tool's serial number against the official Milwaukee service parts diagram before placing your order, since running production changes can alter part compatibility within the same catalog number. In this case there is welcome consistency: Milwaukee lists 45-22-2657 at Figure 4 on all three service bulletin revisions covering the 2656-20, which are 54-26-2500 for serial F26A, 54-26-2501 for serial F26B, and 54-26-2502 for serial F26C, so the same part number applies across every documented serial break on this tool. Authorized dealer cross-reference also lists this sleeve on the 2657-20, 2657-22, and 2657-22CT two-speed impact drivers and on the 2750-20 brushless impact driver, and Milwaukee documents 45-22-2657 at Figure 4 on bulletin 54-26-2760 as well. Before starting the repair, note a critical service warning from the bulletin: the Gearcase End Cap at Figure 24 is LEFT HAND THREAD. Milwaukee instructs that the front end assembly be lowered onto the end cap and hand tightened carefully to avoid cross-threading, then seated with an adjustable wrench using light pressure only, and warns explicitly not to over tighten. The bulletin also cautions that components of the impacting assembly can drop out of the gearcase during this step, so hold them in place. Milwaukee specifies Type J Grease, part number 49-08-4220, for the anvil and gearcase surfaces at reassembly, sold separately.
