C-rings — also commonly called E-clips or external retaining rings — are open, C-shaped spring steel retaining rings that snap into a machined groove on the outside of a shaft, providing a removable mechanical shoulder that retains bearings, gears, collars, and other components in their correct axial position on the shaft. The open C-profile allows the ring to be installed and removed with snap ring pliers without full disassembly of the shaft.
