The flange nut is the outer locking nut that threads onto the grinder's 5/8-11 spindle over the grinding wheel or disc to clamp it securely against the inner disc flange on the other side of the wheel. The correct installation sequence is: inner flange (43-34-0036, sold separately) on the spindle first, then the grinding wheel, then the flange nut threaded on and tightened using a spanner wrench in the holes of the flange nut. A stripped, cross-threaded, or missing flange nut that no longer securely retains the grinding wheel on the spindle requires immediate replacement before the grinder is put back into service.
