The slide pole is one of the two guide poles, a front and a back, that the grinder's slide switch rides on, and the front pole also connects into the switch mechanism: together the poles form the rails that guide the slide switch smoothly through its travel as the operator slides it to turn the grinder on, lock it on, and switch it off. Because the slide switch is actuated constantly and the poles take the sliding load, a worn, bent, or broken slide pole makes the switch stick, bind, or travel roughly, which is both an inconvenience and a control concern on a grinder.
