The Milwaukee 49-16-2891 is a 3-pack of Flat Files for chainsaw chain depth gauge maintenance — the flat file used for filing down the depth gauges (rakers) of chainsaw chain cutter teeth as part of the complete chain sharpening procedure. The depth gauge is the curved leading edge of each chain cutter link that rides on the wood surface ahead of the cutter tooth — it controls how deeply the cutter tooth bites into the wood with each pass. As the cutter teeth are sharpened with the round file, the cutter height decreases progressively while the depth gauge height remains unchanged, increasing the bite depth per pass beyond the designed specification and causing the chain to grab, kick, and cut inefficiently with increased vibration. Flat filing the depth gauges to the specified height relative to the sharpened cutter restores the designed bite depth and smooth cutting action that the chain delivers when both cutters and depth gauges are at their correct proportional heights.
The flat file is the standard tool for depth gauge maintenance — a depth gauge tool (jointer) is used alongside the flat file to confirm the correct file height above the cutter tooth during filing. The 3-pack provides a field supply for multiple sharpening cycles.
