Speed Feed Self-Feeding Wood Bit — a high-speed production boring bit for the 5/8 in. diameter used for 1/2 in. flexible conduit, specific plumbing rough-in applications, and other installations requiring exactly a 5/8 in. bore through wood framing. The Speed Feed design uses a precision-ground replaceable feed screw that provides more aggressive self-advancing action than standard self-feed auger designs — the Speed Feed's sharper, higher-pitch screw tip pulls the bit into the wood at a faster rate per revolution, delivering drilling speeds that outpace standard self-feed auger bits in the same materials. This faster advance rate is most productive in the soft wood species and standard framing lumber that make up the majority of rough-in drilling in residential and commercial wood-frame construction.
The replaceable feed screw is the Speed Feed's most practical service advantage — when the feed screw tip dulls from contact with embedded aggregate, nails, or hard wood grain, the self-advancing action weakens and the screw can be replaced independently at low cost (available as Milwaukee 48-28-6870 coarse thread or 48-28-6880 fine thread) without replacing the complete bit body. This extends the overall bit body's productive service life significantly, since the feed screw typically dulls before the cutting face requires replacement in most wood drilling conditions.
