Milwaukee Big Hawg Diamond File
Model Number: 48-09-5055
The Milwaukee 48-09-5055 is the Big Hawg Diamond File — a precision sharpening tool specifically designed for sharpening Milwaukee Big Hawg hole cutters when the carbide-tipped teeth become dull from extended use cutting through wood, engineered lumber, OSB, plywood, and other wood building materials in rough-in drilling applications. Milwaukee Big Hawg hole cutters are the professional standard for drilling large-diameter holes through wood framing for plumbing drain lines, HVAC ductwork, and electrical rough-in where hole saws would be slower and more prone to binding — the Big Hawg's carbide-tipped teeth and self-feeding design cut faster and last longer than standard bi-metal hole saws in wood applications. When the carbide tips eventually dull from the abrasive silica content of engineered lumber, OSB, and plywood, or from the normal wear of high-volume drilling in standard lumber, the Big Hawg Diamond File restores sharp cutting edges to the carbide teeth in the field without removing the cutter from service for factory sharpening.
The diamond abrasive on the file provides the hardness needed to sharpen tungsten carbide tooth edges — standard steel files are far too soft to abrade carbide and cannot sharpen carbide-tipped cutters. Diamond files cut carbide efficiently when used correctly, removing the small amount of material needed to restore a sharp edge from a dulled carbide tip without removing excessive material that would shorten the tooth life unnecessarily. Sharpening Big Hawg cutters in the field when they first show signs of dulling — increased cutting force required, slower penetration rate, more burning smell during cutting — extends the total service life of each cutter significantly compared to running cutters until they are completely dull before sharpening, which requires removing more material to restore a sharp edge.
See Milwaukee's Big Hawg hole cutter lineup for the full range of standard and self-feed hole cutter sizes for every large-diameter rough-in drilling application in wood framing.
