The Milwaukee 44-90-1050 is a genuine OEM 3/8 in. Snap Ring for compatible Milwaukee impact wrenches — a precision-machined metal retaining ring that seats in the circumferential groove on the impact wrench's 3/8 in. square drive anvil to retain the rubber friction ring in its correct position on the anvil. The snap ring is the outermost retention component in the 3/8 in. anvil's socket retention system — it holds the rubber friction ring captive in the anvil groove so the friction ring can perform its socket retention function. Without the snap ring in place, the friction ring is free to migrate or fall out of the groove during impact wrench operation, leaving the anvil without socket retention and allowing sockets to slide off the drive during use. Note that the rubber friction ring is sold separately — the 44-90-1050 is the snap ring only.
Snap rings can be damaged or lost during anvil service, socket changes, or accidental contact with hard surfaces — the small metal ring can spring free during removal or installation and is difficult to locate once it leaves the anvil.
